Yeah I know they generally have some leaking no matter what you do, this was a bit more dramatic. I drove the Merc when I got back from Japan and it leaked after it was driven, I have been spraying some cleaner around and doing what I can to make it easier to find. I went on the highway so it shot some oil in various places. I think it’s coming from this general area, I don’t think its the pan, I think its just above it, its dirty above there. Annoying, the Z is still on the lift (not from reliability issues, and it doesn’t drip a drop) , this is why I own a Honda CRV! Actually Honda just put my 2006 CRV on the airbag inflator recall list, might have to bring that in too!

My R129 just had the lower oil pan gasket replaced. When we pulled the old gasket off, it was most definitely dead and long overdue. I also had oil spraying down the entire car on the highway.
Does yours smoke at all, or just oil spray on the back?

No smoke, it did the spray thing. I guess I can have it checked, my Merc mechanic is really good. Its just finding time to go. I think its coming from the joint right above it, there was plenty of oil there above it. I think the pan gasket is pretty new.

I don’t know which motor you have, but on the M120, there’s two oil pan gaskets, an upper and a lower. I had the lower done, and it thankfully saved me. The Upper would have required pulling the motor out (possibly just slightly) to do. I hope I don’t have to do that one any time soon though.
I definitely see how it could be coming from the joint right above it, is that an oil return line? The M120 is pretty damn complicated, so anything beyond very basic maintenance is enough to convince me it’s time to hand the keys over.

I think it must be the return. It’s been a while since I’ve looked in this area. The w123 cars are very simple, they use them as taxis in Africa! Seems to be ok when sitting at least.

I’ve read that the oil filter canister seal failing can cause oil down the back of the engine. I think that is the one area on my 240D that doesn’t have a leak.

I think this is that round vertical connection there, probably the return, it had more oil there and the spread seems to be going out from there. Of course the wind blew it all back from there. It doesn’t leak once the engine is off and things cool down, so it must only give it up when under pressure. I saw some oil around the cooler return so I tightened it a bit, then I saw this. I will have to take it to my Merc guy, he has been working on these for forever so I’m not worried. My 300D has been pretty good about leaking, it has had some accumulation and drips off a bit but nothing to be worried about until now.
